I am involved in several clean up and other environmental projects in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. As you pointed out in the article, the behavior of local fishermen is very aggressive and ignorant. They are themselves real polluters, they never bring their garbage back after a fishing trip, they just dump it. Every morning, when I wake up, I collect the plastic bottles on our beach filled with urine, (from their nightly fishing trip with their long-tails) The huge garbage-problem on our beaches is MAINLY caused by Thais people living in the villages along the rivers. There are local dump-sites at these river fronts all over the province, villagers just dump their daily household- garbage directly in the river. The local authorities are well aware this is happening, but do nothing about it, because they don’t want to enforce the law against these potential voters! Instead, they organize beach cleaning days, it’s often not more than taken selfies and a lot of pictures, so the local media can publish an article about them, how hard they work for the community and the environment in their province!
