Great to see the newsletter this morning. I loved this comment:

A wise person once said, β€˜To travel is to endure discomfort of the body in order to gain freedom of the mind.’

Something to remember as we start to travel again!

Cheers,

Dom

Great story, thanks for sharing it David! My first trip was in β€˜95 and was a life changing experience. Looking forward to visiting the country for the first time in two years later in February. Yep lots more requirements nowadays and that β€œangst in the gut” that you’re describing, but doing it anyway…that’s the spirit for me. Thank you!

Well written as usual and boy can I relate to my first time trip in 1994. It is a state of mind to welcome the experience.

Great ...I liked the citation about body discomfort but gaining instead freedom of mind or rather different status of mind

Dave, thanks for sharing your story here. My partner and I began going to Thailand in 2002, then branched out to other places in S.E. Asia. We're in Mexico right now, wishing we were in Thailand, at least I am, and your post was a sweet thing to read. Happy travels whereever and whenever!

I am glad you made it back safely, with this article out just in time for another big snowstorm I see. I love the part of Bangkok where you lived in 2005. I stayed not far from there for several months in 1986, and visit my beloved KT Guesthouse every chance I get. Be well, David. Best wishes.

Beautifully written and documented -- well done! I shared your "escape" story on my Science of Escape Facebook page. "When it comes to international travel, nothing is like the first time." -- and that's why we keep chasing that dragon. :) Side note, my first airport floor on the one-way trip out to BKK was LAX. Now days, Narita is one of my favorite airports.
